To me Amarok is one of the best compositions ever!

Mike Oldfield really knows how to surprise us all! Amork rules!!! smile

Its meaning is quite controversial since some people say it means "I am a rock" or "Amar-ok" and some other say it's related to a "wolf".
According to Wikipedia Amarok is a giant wolf in Inuit mythology. But I also found out that Chinese people associated Sirius Star with a Heavenly Wolf. This particular Star is also related to the "Shining Ones", coincidently a track of the same title is found in "The Songs Of Distant Earth" album.

"Sirius was revered as the Nile Star, or Star of Isis, by the ancient Egyptians. Its annual appearance just before dawn at the Summer Solstice, July 9th, heralded the coming rise of the Nile, upon which Egyptian agriculture depended. This helical rising is referred to in many temple inscriptions, where the star is known as the Divine Sepat, identified as the soul of Isis.
In the temple of Isis-Hathor at Dedendrah, Egypt, appears the inscription, "Her majesty Isis shines into the temple on New Year's Day, and she mingles her light with that of her father on the horizon."

The Arabic word Al Shi'ra resembles the Greek, Roman, and Egyptian names suggesting a common origin in Sanskrit, in which the name Surya, the Sun God, simply means the "shining one."
For 35 days before, and 35 days after the Sun conjuncts it on July 9, the star Sirius is hidden by the Sun's glare.

The ancient Egyptians refused to bury their dead during the 70 days Sirius was hidden from view, because it was believed Sirius was the doorway to the afterlife, and the doorway was thought to be closed during this yearly period.
Located just below the Dog Star there exists a constellation called Argo, the Ship. Astrologically that area in the sky has been known as the river of stars which is a gateway to the ocean of higher consciousness.
The Dog Sirius is one of the watchmen of the Heavens, fixed in one place at the bridge of the Milky Way, keeping guard over the abyss into incarnation.
The Dog Star is a symbol of power, will, and steadfastness of purpose, and exemplifies the One who has succeeded in bridging the lower and higher consciousness.

The Chinese knew this place as the bridge between heaven and hell, the bridge of the gatherer, the judge.
In the higher mind are gathered the results of the experiences of the personality.
Between each life the soul judges its past progress, and the conditions needed to aid its future growth. As long as it is attached to desire, sensation, and needs experiences, it takes a body.
The soul cannot pass over the "bridge" until it is perfected.

The association of Sirius with a celestial dog has been consistent throughout the classical world; even in remote China, the star was identified as a heavenly wolf

In ancient Chaldea (present day Iraq) the star was known as the "Dog Star that Leads," or it was called the "Star of the Dog." In Assyria, it was said to be the "Dog of the Sun." In still older Akkadia, it was named the "Dog Star of the Sun..."

I also found out that when (in many times) the word HAPPY? is mentioned, the meaning is connected to the Holy Spirit. Check this out:

"In various religions, most notably Trinitarian Christianity, the Holy Spirit (also called the Holy Ghost) is the third Person of the Holy Trinity. As such, the various Christian perspectives view him as God himself, a form of God, or a manifestation of God. The word "Spirit" commonly translates the Greek New Testament word pneuma (Greek).

In mainstream Christianity, the Holy Spirit is one person of the Trinity, co-equal with the Father (God) and the Son (Jesus).
Christians believe it is the Holy Spirit who leads people to faith in Jesus and the one who gives them the ability to lead a Christian life. The Spirit dwells inside every true Christian, each one's body being His temple (First Epistle to the Corinthians 3:16). He is depicted as a 'Counsellor' or 'Helper' (paracletus in Latin, derived from Greek), guiding them in the way of the truth. The Spirit's action in one's life is believed to produce positive results, known as the Fruit of the Spirit. The Spirit is also believed to give gifts (i.e. abilities) to Christians. These may include the charismatic gifts such as prophecy, tongues, healing, and knowledge. Christians holding a view known as cessationism believe these gifts were given only in New Testament times. Christians almost universally agree that certain more mundane "spiritual gifts" are still in effect today, including the gifts of ministry, teaching, giving, leadership, and mercy (see, e.g. Romans 12:6-8. In some sects of Christianity, the experience of the Holy Spirit is referred to as being "anointed".

In the African American Gospel music tradition, the experience of the Holy Spirit is referred to as 'getting happy'.

Get Happy is a term used in the African American Gospel Music tradition, that refers to the experience of receiving the Holy Spirit during a Church service, usually involving ecstatic singing, or during prayer, or spontaneously.
Accounts of nineteenth century African American slave spirituality use the term, as recorded in the book "God Struck Me Dead, Voices of Ex-Slaves"

All of my people were great Christians. Shouting, singing, praying, and good old heartfelt religion make up the things that filled their lives. [...] Aunt Charlotte used to cry most all the time when she got happy. - an ex-slave preacher, in "God Struck Me Dead", page 75.

One of the early nineteenth century traditional ' Negro Spirituals' to use the phrase, is the following:

GOOD MORNING EVERYBODY
Good morning everybody
Good morning everybody, Lord
My soul got happy this morning
My soul got happy this morning, Lord
You may call me "hypocrite member"
You may call me "hypocrite member", Lord
But my soul got happy, this morning
But my soul got happy this morning, Lord
I'm going to see my mother
I'm going to see my mother, Lord
Going to sit down by my Jesus
Going to sit down by my Jesus, Lord. "

Well, now that I remember there are African drums in Amarok!!! smile

And the Woman's voice begins not with GOOD MORNING EVERYONE but with HELLO EVERYONE...

I suppose you think that nothing much is happening at the moment. Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha. Well, that's what I want to talk to you all about; endings. Now, endings normally happen at the end. But as we all know, endings are just beginnings. You know, once these things really get started, it's jolly hard to stop them again. However, as we have all come this far, I think, under the circumstances the best solution is that we all just keep going. Let's keep this going in sight, never an ending. Let's remember that this world wants fresh beginnings. I feel here, in this country, and throughout the world, we are crying out for beginnings, beginnings. We never want to hear this word "endings". I know we all want to sit down. I know you want to take it easy. Of course we're looking for the good. Of course we're looking for the fresh start.

Isn't that charming? Do you know, I really feel I could dance.
Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha... (dancing) Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha... charming... ha-ha-ha... großes Grinsen

AMOR,

Sirius
